This dish, with various types of dandelion was created in 2022 for a Fifty Bees exhibition. There were five years of exhibitions, each had fifty of 250 British bee species, created, usually life sized, from needlefelted wool and embroidery by Lydia Needle. https://www.instagram.com/lydianeedle
Fifty artists were then invited to make a companion piece for each bee. This was my piece to accompany Lydia’s Shiny Dufourea bee, showing the “weed” species it relies on. The back reads “YOU MAY SEE US AS INSIGNIFICANT WEEDS, BUT WE SUSTAIN THE HARDWORKING AND OVERLOOKED. WE ARE AKIN TO THE STARS AND MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD.”
I don’t usually try to make my sculptures quite as realistic, but this one was special!
16.2cm x 17.5cm x 2.8cm deep.
Sculpted porcelain bowl with delicate, hand tooled texture. This piece has been coloured with layers of underglaze and glaze, with the underside left unglazed. The poem is stamped into the clay and highlighted with gilding wax. This is not waterproof, so care should be taken when cleaning the dish.
This is a one-off piece. I am unlikely to make anything similar in the future.
